dust bowl
The specific plant...
Cat-tails are cat-tails. rhizomes extensive, fleshy; stems to 9 ft. tall; leaf blades strap-like, stiff, rounded on back, spiraling in top half, sheathed together at base to appear "flattened"; inflorescence spike-like, very densely packed with tiny flowers, male flowers are inin top cluster.Cattails are grass & wetland plants with a unique flowering spike, flat blade like leaves that reach heights from 3 to 10 feet. They are one of the most common plants in large marshes and on the edge of ponds. Two species are common in US: broad leaved cattail.
Under the right conditions, cattails can grow and spread vigorously. The pollinated flowers develop into fluffy seed heads, blowing across a pond with breezes. Just as commonly, cattail spread through their root system. The thick, white roots, called rhizones, grow underground near the edge ponds and in shollow swales. click here to play a grassland animal game!!! :)
